My Favorite Fonts: Volume I

Posted on: March 08, 2008, Under: Design

I am a huge fan of typography, and fonts are usually my favorite aspect of designing something. I’ve compiled a list of my favorite fonts, both free and pay fonts for you guys to check out. While I’m sure a lot of the pricier pay fonts could be obtained illegally for free, I don’t advocate such usage and I have purchased my pay fonts out of respect for the original designer. Either way, they’re lovely to look at and use.

Century Gothic

Century Gothic - Century Gothic is one of my favorite fonts because not only is it stylish and modern, but it’s also very versatile. I use it on a variety of projects no matter what the style may be, and it always seems to flow cohesively with whatever I’m working on.

Coney Island - This free font is one of my favorites among the cutesy-er fonts, and it works well with illustrations. It’s also a nice font to use when you’re designing headers, because the letters are all the same height making it easier to align with text and other elements while still being visually cohesive.

Cooper Black - Like Century Gothic and Rockwell, Cooper Black came free with my computer/Windows installation. It’s versatile, yet stylish enough to go nicely with cutesy illustrations and headers.

Giddyup - Giddyup is the font currently being used on this website. I love the curls, the little stars and the stylish rendering of the letter terminals. It works nicely as an accent font in conjunction with a simpler, sans-serif font (like Vag Rounded BT, which is also currently being used here.)

Helvetica Neue - I absolutely adore the entire Helvetica font family, but this is my favorite variation. I love the thin lines, the modern flow and the neat look of the font. I use this font in headers, or somewhere where I can make the font large enough to be able to see it nicely. I HATE it when people use it as a default text font, though, as it’s nearly impossible to read at an unantialiased 11px size.

Myriad Pro Semibold Italic - The Myriad font family is a great, simple font that I use on a regular basis for more modern, professional feeling designs. Myriad was originally designed for Adobe systems, and is now used on most of their advertising as well as being their default corporate font.

Rockwell - Lately I’ve developed a love of slab serif fonts, and this is one of my favorites. Also a very versatile font, I love the slightly retro feel it has. It looks great on both modern designs as well as cutesy-er more colorful ones.

Rosewood Fill - Rosewood Fill is the font many of you might remember from my last theme. I use it a lot on my illustrations, and I love the bold statement it makes. It also has an old, retro feel to it while still possessing modern characteristics, so it works well with either. It also resizes wonderfully, unlike some of my other favorites, so it looks great large or small. One of my all time favorites.

Vag Rounded BT - Try to ignore the giant VAG reference here, I didn’t pick the name. Vag Rounded is such a great font for various reasons. I love sans-serif fonts because of their stylish simplicity, and this font combines that with nicely rounded ends. I usually use this font uppercase, but it looks great either way.
